Social Circles – Creating Connection in the Silver Society through Adult Education

Welcome to the Social Circles MOOC – a learning platform dedicated to combating loneliness in older adults by utilising adult education as a key tool. Adult education offers a multifaceted approach that provides social interaction, a sense of purpose, and opportunities for continuous learning. The Social Circles Project seeks to overcome barriers to participation in adult education by offering tailored educational resources and support. Overall, the project strives to build inclusive learning environments, increase participation in adult education, and encourage community engagement among older adults.

Social Circles Educators’ Toolbox

This toolkit features 24 micro-learning resources for adult educators to use with older learners. These resources serve as short educational tasters, designed to rekindle their interest in learning through engaging topics and the social aspects of educational participation. Each micro-learning resource provides one hour worth of learning content, and comprise various multimedia formats to promote active engagement.

This toolkit includes 24 introductory videos, learner handouts, short quizzes, and 1-hour lesson plans per theme for adult educators. All materials have been compiled into a handbook and are organised around four key themes designed to engage reluctant older adult learners.- Time and budget management - Digital skills and social media - Artistic and cultural skills - Sport and hobbies

Community Coaching Programme

The Social Circles Community Coaching Programme (CCP) aims to enhance the skills of adult educators and staff to support older adults in accessing education, promote social cohesion and reduce social isolation. The CCP accommodates diverse learning styles by utilising flexible approaches, including adaptable lesson plans and technology, to suit different skill and comfort levels.
